Review of the Forum:
The study of the history of the Anti-Japanese War is a common concern of academia on both sides of the Straits. In recent years, the channels of communication between scholars on both sides of the Straits have become increasingly perfect. The goal of "sharing historical materials, writing historical books and defending national dignity and honor together" has also been gradually realized. On the 82nd anniversary of the July 7th Incident, on the morning of July 9th, Professor Liu Weikai, a full-time professor in the Department of History, Taiwanese Political University, was invited to hold a special academic lecture on "Current Situation and Prospects of Taiwan's Anti-Japanese War Research".
Professor Liu Weikai
The historical research on the anti-Japanese war in Taiwan has always been the focus of modern and contemporary Chinese history, with the emergence of special books, war history and papers. Special books such as Wu Xiangxiang's "History of the Second Sino-Japanese War" are two volumes of Monographs on the history of the War of Resistance Against Japan. The history of the War of Resistance Against Japan is the most comprehensive one with 101 volumes, including all previous battles of the War of Resistance Against Japan. In addition, the Navy and air force have their own history of Resistance Against Japan due to their different operational nature, including "History of the Navy's War of Resistance Against Japan" and "Air Force's War". History of Army Anti-Japanese War, History of Air Defense Anti-Japanese War, etc. In terms of the thesis, it covers a wide range of topics, including pre-war policy towards Japan, wartime political diplomacy, wartime construction, wartime culture and education, wartime society, Kuomintang-Communist relations, military intelligence, puppet organizations, character studies, etc. Among them, a new edition of the history of the Chinese Anti-Japanese War was published in 2015, which represents the latest achievements in the study of the history of the Anti-Japanese War in Taiwan academic circles.
The new edition of the history of China's Anti-Japanese War is divided into six volumes: War Choices, Military Operations, National Anti-Japanese War, Wartime Society, Foreign Relations and Post-War China. It discusses the history of the Anti-Japanese War from a more comprehensive scope and perspective. The author of each section of the book is a researcher in the field of research, named "New Edition", in order to break through the old thinking pattern, interpretation framework, taboos and restrictions, and to have a new argumentation pattern and new writing direction. We should get rid of the narrow nationalism standard and discuss it from an international perspective with high objectivity and tolerance, and go beyond the traditional mode of argumentation of military history, political history and diplomatic history to extend it to social and cultural levels. Making full use of newly opened historical materials, such as Chiang Kai-shek archives, Chen Cheng archives, Military Bureau archives, Hoover Institute archives, as well as newly excavated key historical materials, which were rare or unused in the past. Starting from the September 18th Incident, this paper explains the reasons and experiences for the transition from partial confrontation to full-scale war and even to the confluence with the Second World War. It also extends the discussion of the influence of the War of Resistance on the development of the post-war domestic and international situations. It not only describes military operations, but also discusses the construction of wartime, the mobilization of the whole people and the changes of wartime society. Migration, wartime foreign relations, post-war development and the impact of war, etc. Several themes and fields have been less discussed in the past, such as family, women, medical treatment, ethnic minorities, overseas Chinese, religious groups, traitors, war criminals, comfort women, war literature and textbooks, etc. In addition, there are discussions on special modes of warfare, such as intelligence warfare, guerrilla warfare, and narratives of occupied areas and the rear. Describe and so on.
At present, Taiwan's anti-Japanese War archives mainly include Chiang Kai-shek Archives, Chen Cheng Archives, National Government Archives, Foreign Ministry Archives, Dai Li Archives, History and Political Compilation Bureau Archives of the Ministry of Defense, Military Intelligence Bureau Archives of the Ministry of Defense, Supreme National Defense Commission Archives and Special Archives.
